Although the company explicitly stated that it is committed to its 3G deployment, it added that it will work towards an LTE network. The statement will add fuel to the suspicion that the company's commitment to the home-grown TD-SCDMA standard is not whole hearted and that it is seeking to move as swiftly as possible to the more widespread LTE standard.

The company also confirmed that it will continue to seek out overseas investment opportunities.

ISLAMABAD (August 20 2009): Chairman, Senate Standing Committee on Interior, Senator Talha Mehmood, stated that the FIA's insistence that SBP should investigate all exchange companies is 'irrational,' as it will further aggravate the country's economy.
He said this while talking to reporters after the closing ceremony of a three-day extensive training of Open Source Operating Systems (OSOS), organised by Pakistan Computer Association (PCA) in league with Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB). Pakistan is already under terrible economic pressure and any such move will force the exchange companies to close their business, Talha explained.

Criticising recent decision on sugar price, he said that the government should investigate the sugar crisis and people involved in this scam should be taken to task. 'Sale of sugar at Rs 38 or 40 is affordable to people, but who allowed the sugar mafia to sell at Rs 60 or more rates, he asked.

Talha accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of interfering in Pakistan's internal matters saying, 'who is IMF to dictate terms to Pakistan, it is a small international organisation. IMF has given a loan to Pakistan, which will be returned, why IMF is dictating policy to Pakistan, as it does not make any sense?' Senator Talha queried.

Earlier, addressing the closing ceremony, Senator Talha said that Pakistan has immense potential in computer and Information Technology and government ought to focus on this industry as one of its top priority.

'We are blessed with talented professionals and our youth have great capacity to serve the country in the computer and IT industry. But the apathy of the government is ironic, which is keeping us behind other nations of the region in this important arena,' Talha Mehmood said.

He said that such workshops should be held more frequently so that our skilled IT professionals may be able to grasp the modern developments in the field and serve the country. He assured the participants that keeping in view the importance of IT and Computer industry for the overall progress and development of the sector he will raise the concerns of the IT industry at every possible platform.

He urged the government to provide enabling environment for the growth of the industry. Munawar Iqbal, Central President of the PCA highlighted the significance of the Open Source Operating Systems (OS O/S) and elaborated that Pakistan, as a third world country, cannot afford expensive software technology, which is being manipulated by few international monopolists.

He said that Open Source System provides free of cost but highly effective free alternate solutions. Thus, the government must come forward to encouraging and facilitating the training of this system to our local industry. Earlier, three day training of Open Source Operating Systems (OS O/S) was concluded successfully. During the training, the stakeholders were given detailed orientation sessions about these operating systems, which would be available almost free of cost to the stakeholders, ending monopoly of expensive software in the country.

It was first of its kind of training program where IT experts and other stakeholders were provided an opportunity to learn about low cost operating system to assist in improving Pakistan's business environment and working conditions of local corporate culture. The PCA did not charge any cost of training, but provide maximum literature, data and training advice from national and international experts to learn about the Open Source Operating Systems (OS O/S).

The training was aimed at helping the IT professionals to learn how to operate state of the art software technology and launch the same in Pakistan effectively. Hence, an affordable new IT new technology would be available to all users in Pakistan besides protecting and ensuring enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) regulations.

China Mobile Communication Corporation is actively considering introducing solar power technology in Pakistan for electrifying cellular base stations of its subsidiary China Mobile Pakistan.

The move comes amid an acute power deficit and prolonged load-shedding in Pakistan.CMCC is already applying solar power technology at its 2,000 base stations, out of total 170,000, across China, the company’s Chief Executive, Wang Jianzhou, told a delegation of Pakistani media persons who visited the headquarters of China Mobile in Beijing recently.

Jianzhou said use of solar power technology was also part of the Green Action Plan of the company aimed at reducing pollution by emitting less carbon and consuming less energy. “We think that reducing hazardous emissions is an important goal of our company,” he said.

China Mobile Pakistan, in a drive to widen its network, has built 4,500 base stations for providing cellular phone services to its 6.5 million subscribers at 3,500 locations in the four provinces, Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir.

The CMCC chief said power crisis was one of the major hurdles in smooth functioning and growth of cellular phone companies in Pakistan where cell stations had to be equipped with electricity generators at all times, which increased operating costs. He cited higher taxes, high operating costs and import duties on equipment purchase as other major challenges for the cellphone operators in an environment where profit margins had been narrowing due to stiff competition.

Jianzhou, who is also Chairman and CEO of China Mobile Pakistan, said the company had been anxiously waiting for a Long Distance and International (LDI) licence from the Pakistan government in a bid to expand business in the first overseas venture of the company. “We will also try to improve management to reduce the operating cost of our business in Pakistan.

” He said by and large he was satisfied with doing business in a friendly environment in Pakistan where the market had a lot of potential for penetration and growth. “There is a big difference between the markets for cellular phone operators in Pakistan and China and the CMCC will gain a lot of experience by doing business in Pakistan.“This experience will benefit the largest cellphone company of the world a lot by helping it to expand its business to other parts of the globe.

”China Mobile Pakistan would further invest US$500 million by the end of the current year to propel growth of its cellular phone service, Zong, which was providing thousands of direct and indirect jobs. “So far the performance of Zong is in line with our expectations and we will do more to boost its output,” he said.

To a question, Jianzhou dismissed all reports as rumours about acquisition of other cellphone companies in the region by China Mobile Pakistan. “We will let you know whenever such development takes place,” he said.To another question, he said

CMCC had obtained this year a licence for offering hi-tech 3G (third generation) services to its subscribers in China. However, at present market and business conditions in Pakistan were not favourable to introduce such a state-of-the-art service there.

“China’s cellular phone market is at a more advanced stage with greater availability of modern infrastructure for introducing such high-end services for the consumers,” he said.

He urged that PTCL should offer special business package to KCCI’s registered members.

Sony says that it has launched a new type of lithium ion secondary battery that combines high-power and long-life performance, using olivine-type lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material. The Olivine-type lithium iron phosphate used in this new battery is suited for use as a cathode material due to its robust crystal structure and stable performance, even at high temperatures.

This new battery delivers an extended life-span of over four-times existing secondary lithium ion batteries used in conventional electronic devices. This new battery can also be charged to 99% of its full capacity in 30 minutes, which represents approximately half the charge time of Sony's current lithium ion battery line-up.

By combining this new cathode material with Sony's proprietary particle design technology that minimizes electrical resistance to deliver high power output, and also leveraging the cell structure design technology Sony accrued developing its current "Fortelion series" lithium ion secondary battery line-up, Sony says that it has realized a high power density of 1800W/kg and extended life span of approximately 2,000 charge-discharge cycles.

Furthermore, with this new battery able to charge rapidly, in addition to providing a stable discharge of voltage, it will first be supplied for use in motor driven devices such as power tools, after which its application will be expanded to a wide range of other mobile electronic devices.

LAHORE (August 18 2009): The NetSol Technologies Limited Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Salim Ghauri has urged the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) to constitute a task force immediately to explore the automation opportunities in China. China is an immediate opportunity for Pakistan IT companies, as its banking sector is automating fast with a vision to expand to the global market in near future.

Chinese banks are all set to flourish and are in an urgent need of diversified software to achieve this goal, Ghauri said in a statement here on Monday. Pakistan has a good number of IT companies with a vast experience in banking sector both inside and outside country thus Pakistani IT companies should immediately look into banking sector of China, he added.

"The Chinese banking sector would be expanding extensively in next 10 years. Similarly, health sector is one of the largest areas where China needs automation," he added. The PSEB should assist companies to make their ways to the Chinese market. Also, Pakistan embassy in Beijing should play a proactive role to avail the strong business opportunities for Pakistani IT companies in China, he added. He lamented that the recent Trade Policy has totally ignored the IT sector as an engine of growth, which reflects the short sightedness of policymakers on this front.

According to him, Pakistan needs an aggressive and growth-oriented industry and the IT industry can play this role in global market. It is not easy to understand why the government has ignored it in the recently announced Trade Policy, he added. The IT industry of Pakistan has shown tremendous growth in recent past. It is a services-oriented industry with no huge investment, required to import hardware in the shape of raw material. Pakistan exports are reached to 210 million dollar, which is a challenge as number is higher than SBP reports
.

KARACHI (August 18 2009): The loss after tax of WorldCall Telecom declined to Rs 226.976 million in the half year period ended June 30, 2009
as compared to a loss of Rs 283.731 million in the corresponding period in 2008. The board of directors of the company in its meeting declared per share loss of Re. 0.26 in the period under review against Re. 0.37 in the same period last year.

According to financial results, the company's net revenue increased to Rs 3.989 billion in the half year period this year against Rs 2.104 billion in the same period last year. The company's direct cost increased to Rs 3.344 billion in this period against Rs 1.547 billion previously. The company's before tax loss was recorded at Rs 258.578 million in the first half of 2009 against a before tax loss of Rs 350.045 million in the same period in 2008.

Friendships can be inferred with 95% accuracy from call records and the proximity of users, says a new report.
Researchers fitted 94 mobiles in the US with logging software to gather data. The results also showed that those with friends near work were happier, while those who called friends while at work were less satisfied. The data, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed a marked contrast with answers reported by the users themselves. "We gave out a set of phones that were installed with a piece of 'uber-spyware'," said the study's lead author Nathan Eagle, now at the Santa Fe Institute. "It's invisible to the user but logs everything: communication, users' locations, people's proximity by doing continuous Bluetooth scans." The researchers then compared the data with results from standard surveys given to the mobile users - and found, as the social sciences have found time and again, that people reported different behaviour than the mobile data revealed. "What we found was that people's responses were wildly inaccurate," Dr Eagle told BBC News. Mobile phone data are fantastic complements to the existing, very deep survey literature that the social sciences already have
Nathan EagleSanta Fe Institute"For people who said that a given individual was a friend, they dramatically overestimated the amount of time they spent. But for people who were not friends, they dramatically underestimated that amount of time." The researchers were able to guess from the mobile data alone, with 95% accuracy, if any given pair of users were friends. An analysis of the overall proximity of a given user to his or her friends - maximised if they worked together - was correlated to people who reported a high level of satisfaction at work. Conversely, those who made calls to their friends while working were found to report lower levels of satisfaction at work. Wide applicationOne principal question of such a small sample size, made up exclusively of students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is how much the results really mean in a sociology context. However, the group has gone on to carry out a larger study that just finished, comprising 1,000 people in Helsinki, Finland. There is also an ongoing trial of the approach in Kenya, which Dr Eagle said includes participants ranging from computer science students to people who had never used a phone before. Standard Nokia 6600 handsets were fitted with "uber-spyware"Dr Eagle sees the approach not as a means to supplant but rather to supplement traditional measures. "Mobile phone data are fantastic complements to the existing, very deep survey literature that the social sciences already have," he said. Moreover, he sees it not just as a means to map out the networks of friends that mobile users might have, but to carry on this "reality mining" in contexts ranging from the modelling of the spread of disease to the design of urban spaces. "We were capturing data when the Red Sox won the [baseball championship] World Series for the first time," Dr Eagle recounted. "Suddenly all our subjects became unpredictable; they all flooded into downtown Boston to a rally in the centre of the city. "City planners approached us because they wanted to know how people were using urban infrastructure, to know when the people left the rally, how many walked across the bridge and how many took the subway, how many biked or took the bus. "We can give them some real insight with the idea of helping them build a better city that reflects people's actual behaviour."

adcallblocker 200x300 Telenor Call Block Service Telenor has also introduced call block service – similar to Ufone’s call block service but I will never use these kind of services when I can block calls and text messages free using my phone’s built in features – or you can install call and SMS blocking software on your handsets.

It may no longer be necessary to use a GPS navigation device if you have an Apple iPhone 3G or 3GS. On Monday, GPS heavyweight TomTom said its new $99 turn-by-turn app, TomTom for the iPhone, is now available on Apple's App Store.

The company said the app uses a new IQ Routes technology that uses the experiences of other TomTom drivers to determine the quickest route instead of relying on travel time. This technology can make trips quicker 35 percent of the time, TomTom said.

Like a standard GPS device, the app will suggest alternate routes as needed, such as when a turn is missed. The iPhone's screen can be tapped to zoom in and out, and the app will not only provide directions to a restaurant, but let you call ahead for a reservation.

TomTom for the iPhone also lets users pick a contact from the iPhone and get travel directions that can be viewed horizontally or vertically in nighttime or daytime mode. It comes with full maps of the U.S., Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and voice navigation in 18 languages.

The company plans to sell a kit to attach the iPhone to a car windshield or dashboard. It comes with a GPS antenna, speakers and hands-free calling features.

The app requires iPhone OS 3.0 and TomTom is working on compatibility with early iPhones and the iPod touch.

Some alternatives to TomTom are available on the App Store, including Navigator from AT&T and Google Maps. The AT&T service costs $9.99 a month while Google Maps is free, but both stop working if a data connection is lost.

ISLAMABAD : The Pakistan Computer Association (PCA) has decided to organise an extensive training program from August 17 to provide a unique opportunity to IT professionals and computer vendors for learning and understanding the Open Source Operating Systems (OS OS).

According to an announcement of the Association here on Sunday, the stakeholders would be given detailed orientation sessions about this operating system, which would be available almost free of cost to the stakeholders, ending the monopoly of expensive software in the country. This would be first of its kind of training program where IT experts and other stakeholders would be provided an opportunity to learn about low cost operating system helpful in Pakistan business environment and working conditions of local corporate culture. The PCA would not charge any cost of training, but would provide literature, data and training advice from national and international experts to learn about the Open Source Operating Systems (OS OS).

The training will help the IT professionals to learn how to operate state-of-the-art software technology and launch the same in Pakistan effectively. Hence, an affordable new IT would be available to all users in Pakistan besides protecting and ensuring following the Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) Regulations.

The IT industry of Pakistan needs to enhance its adaptability to grasp the emerging global trends and to ensure smooth application of the rapidly changing technology and to attract further investment in the sector the Pakistan Computer Association (PCA) has taken special initiative of providing training opportunity in Open Source Operating Systems (OS OS) to the stakeholders of the industry throughout Pakistan.

The trend of Open Source OS is rapidly growing and getting popular in Europe and rest of the world. To ensure/promote its application, some countries have even managed special legislation from their parliaments in their countries. The first phase of the countrywide training would be held on Monday, August 17, 2009 in Islamabad and the same training would be conducted in the other parts of the country subsequently.

The IT industry of the country, while appreciating the initiative of the PCA, has demanded that the government should persuade the software companies to introduce country-specific prices for the country, so that the public at large should benefit through affordable prices. This is more so keeping in view the fact that Pakistan is a poor and one of a third world countries wherein unaffordable exorbitant prices are beyond the purchasing power of the common end users.

The PCA has announced that all these high profile trainings would be conducted by certified and qualified professionals in collaboration with Pakistan Software Export Board and Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad, and, more importantly, it would be provided free of cost. Certificates would be awarded among the participants on the conclusion of the workshop.

Munawar Iqbal, President of PCA (central) has said that the training facility will be available to IT professionals and preferably vendors only to ensure productivity and effective usefulness of the training programme. He added that through professionally adequately trained, well conversant, manpower and by following in letter and spirit IPR Regulations new venues of international investment in this sector would be possible.

It has been communicated to Zong Users through SMS that Zong will charge all balance inquiries at 10 paisas per inquiry from September 1st , 2009. Zong customers received following message,

"Dear Customer from Sep 01,2009 balance inquiry request *222# will be charged @10 paisas to give you the seamless connectivity on ZONG network"

Earlier, Telenor and Ufone had announced to charge 10 paisas for each balance inquiries, through a message on their websites – which isn’t there now, thanks to PTA.

PTA had directed all cellular companies to advance notice to all customers before imposing any charge. As far as Zong’s this new charge is concerned, i guess PTA won’t cause problem for the company as Zong sent SMS to all of its customers, notifying them for service charges well before the imposition date.

Ufone Live Chat Ufone Introduces Live Online Support (But only for Postpaid initially)Ufone has introduced this Live Online Support option for its postpaid customers initially, which will be available for prepaid consumers too in future (This is something we anticipate and wish too – however, no official words on it yet).

For getting support you need to be a Ufone postpaid verified user, otherwise you can’t chat live with the support guys. With verified user I mean, you will have to register your number on Ufone’s website with a username/password, name and CNIC in order to verify your number before getting support.

Apparently looks like that this live chat support this is in beta, that’s why not everyone can chat otherwise it could be a good tool to grab non-Ufone users to their network.

This is for sure a big step towards customers’ support – and with time, it will get perfection in it to maximize customers’ satisfaction.

How to Use Live Support

  • Click “Live Support” button on Ufone’s website
  • New users will Register, while registered users can Login using their username/password. For Registration system will ask you for your Ufone number, Name, CNIC and password.
  • In logged-in Area you can update your profile, request for chat and log-off
  • After requesting for chat, you will be connected to Live Support, for live Chat.

BTW this online support is free for charge!

Things Ufone can improve

  • Verification of mobile numbers through CNIC is good, but not that secure (Plenty of people around me can have my name, number and CNIC information. They can register my account with this information and start getting critical information about me. Ufone should send a PIN number to cell phone as an SMS to verify account, or otherwise system generated password to my mobile Number (that I can change in future)
  • I am not sure what vendor Ufone has used to develop this application – but it would be nice if they send me chat log into my email, as a record or for future reference.
  • Chat application works good, almost on all browsers, but messages see some latency – it needs some more debugging I guess.

ISLAMABAD (August 15 2009): Internet is going to become the next growing industry in Pakistan as the user mark is predicted to gain from 18 million to 22 million by 2013 whereby some 4.3 million users would be using broadband Internet.
According to official sources here on Friday, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is working in collaboration with educational institutes to get the new generation familiar with Internet.
Internet is growing high especially in a scenario when Universal Service Fund (USF) is making massive efforts to take Internet to the rural areas of the country. Still, there's a long way to go, as the tele-density is merely 11 percent, sources said. Experts are expecting good because there were only 133,000 Internet users back in 2000.

Microsoft has underlined support for its Internet Explorer 6 web browser, despite acknowledging its flaws.
The software giant said it would support IE6 until 2014 - four years beyond the original deadline.
Critics - some of which have started an online campaign - want the eight-year-old browser mothballed because they claim it slows the online experience.
"Friends do not let friends use IE6," said Amy Barzdukas, Microsoft's general manager for Internet Explorer.
"If you are in my social set and I have been to your house for dinner, you are not using IE6," she said. "But it is much more complicated when you move into a business setting."
"It's hard to be cavalier in this economy and say 'oh it's been around for so long they need to upgrade,'" Ms Barzdukas told journalists in San Francisco..
Web monitoring firms estimate that 15-20% of people still use IE6 to browse the web.
Enough is enough
Among those speaking out against IE6 is a group of more than 70 developers who have banded together to form a project called ie6nomore.
"Enough is enough," they implore on their website.
Justin.tv says its amazed at how the anti IE6 campaign has taken off
"Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 was released in late 2001. For its time, it was a decent browser, but in 2009, it is still in use by a significant portion of the web population, and its time is now up."
"Web developers hate IE6," said Evan Solomon of Justin.tv, one of the backers of the campaign.
"We are passionate because we run a website and something like 10% of our users use IE6, but our web designers and developers have to spend a lot of time debugging for the platform.
"The other issue for us is that we have launched an API to let people build applications and while our goal is to make it as easy as possible for people to do this, IE6 is a barrier," Mr Solomon told BBC News.
In a blog post in response to such campaigns, the software giant said that while this issue is a simple one for technology enthusiasts, "the choice to upgrade software on a PC belongs to the person responsible for the PC".
"Many PCs don't belong to individual enthusiasts, but to organisations. The backdrop might be a factory floor or hospital ward or school lab or government organisation, each with its own business applications," wrote Dean Hachamovitch, general manager for the browser group.
"Dropping support for IE6 is not an option because we committed to supporting the IE included with Windows for the lifespan of the product."
"Best experience"
Despite the renewed commitment, Microsoft said it would prefer people to move to IE8, which it says comes with improved functionality and security.
IE8 has been downloaded roughly 250,000 times since its March release
"We want people to have the best experience they can have on Microsoft software," said Ms Barzdukas.
"If people get frustrated with that experience and they say 'Microsoft stinks and IE stinks' and they're basing that on technology that was designed nearly a decade ago, well yeah that is concerning."
Industry watchers believe, that despite Microsoft's backing, IE6's days are numbered.
"IE6 will just die away anyway," said Harry McCracken, editor and founder of tech news site Technologizer.
"I only have around 7% of people who visit my site using IE6 and it will just dwindle away no matter what anyone does," he said.
Threat
Microsoft's touting of IE8 comes as browser competition intensifies.
The most immediate threat to Microsoft's 68% market share comes in the shape of Mozilla's Firefox - used by 22% of browsers.
Firefox, introduced in 2004, recently claimed its one billionth download
"The competition Microsoft has to worry about right now is Firefox. Not just from a market share perspective but from an innovation perspective because their plug-ins work really well," Ronald Gruia, a principal analyst with Frost & Sullivan told BBC News.
"In the future they have to look out for Google with its Chrome browser," he said. "The main concern there for Microsoft is the rise in cloud computing and software as a service. Google is becoming very effective at delivering applications in the cloud and therefore poses a huge threat to Microsoft."
"This is the best time to be a browser user because there is so much choice," agreed Mr McCracken.
"Almost anyone on the planet who uses the web uses Google and that gives them a powerful way to market Chrome. They started with the browser and now they have the Chrome operating system as an even more direct attack on Microsoft's core business.
"My guess is Mozilla is what it is and that battle is, in some way, over. Chrome doesn't have a huge market share at the moment, but if I was Microsoft I would be worried about Google making Chrome really big." said Mr McCracken.
Such issues did not seem to trouble Ms Barzdukas.
"IE is still the most broadly used browser in the world. We are focused and we are here to play."
"Clearly Google is a very strong technology company with a number of offerings across the internet space but beyond that, I don't have a comment on them as a browser vendor in particular," stated Ms Barzdukas.

Nokia has joined forces with Microsoft to port Microsoft Office Mobile and Microsoft business communications, collaboration and device management software to Nokia's Symbian based smartphones. Starting from next year, Nokia intends to start shipping Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile on its smartphones, followed by other Office applications and related software and services in the future.

Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop and Nokia's Executive Vice President for Devices Kai Oistamo announced the agreement, outlining a shared vision for the future of mobile productivity. This is the first time that either company has embarked on an alliance of this scope and nature.

"With more than 200 million smartphone customers globally, Nokia is the world's largest smartphone manufacturer and a natural partner for us,"said Elop. "Today's announcement will enable us to expand Microsoft Office Mobile to Nokia smartphone owners worldwide and allow them to collaborate on Office documents from anywhere, as part of our strategy to provide the best productivity experience across the PC, phone and browser."

"The scope of the alliance between Microsoft and Nokia, and potential value for the enterprise and individual is significant," said Stephen Drake, VP of Mobility & Telecom at IDC. "By bringing Microsoft's productivity solutions to Nokia's large customer base, the two companies should be better able to serve the needs of the growing mobile worker population, which IDC estimates to reach 1 billion worldwide in 2011."
