Motorola has shown off its first Android based smartphone, along with a collection of user interfaces it is calling MOTOBLUR. The first handset, the Motorola CLIQ in the U.S. and Motorola DEXT elsewhere around the globe, will be released in Q4 of this year.

Developed by Motorola, MOTOBLUR enables users to sync contacts, posts, messages, photos and much more - from sources such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Gmail, work and personal e-mail, and LastFM - and automatically deliver it to the home screen. With MOTOBLUR, all conversation threads, friend updates, stories, links, photos and more are automatically delivered to live widgets on the home screen. There is no need to open and close different applications or menus. It's all organized, streamed and delivered throughout the device in unexpected ways:

Sanjay Jha, co-CEO of Motorola and CEO of Motorola Mobile Devices, announced MOTOBLUR today during a keynote at GigaOM's Mobilize '09 conference.

"With MOTOBLUR we are differentiating the Android experience for consumers by delivering a unique mobile device experience designed around the way people interact today," said Jha. "MOTOBLUR, which will be available on our first Android-powered device and on multiple Android devices in our upcoming portfolio, helps us to create phones that are instinctive, social and smart."

All contacts, log-in information, home screen customizations, e-mail and social network messages are backed up on a remote secure server. Lost or stolen phones can be found with integrated A-GPS from the online owner's portal, and data can even be wiped clean.

On the handset side, the Android based QWERTY phone supports a 5 megapixel camera, 3.1-inch HVGA touch-screen display and the usual generic smartphone functions. It also comes with a music player with pre-loaded Amazon MP3 store application, Shazam, iMeem Mobile, and a pre-installed 2GB microSD memory card with support for up to 32 GB of removable memory.

In the USA, Motorola CLIQ will be available exclusively with T-Mobile. Motorola DEXT will be available with Orange in the United Kingdom and France, Telefonica in Spain and America Movil in Latin America.

Opening up the next innovative chapter of personal and location-aware internet, Nokia announced lifecasting with Ovi, a partnership with the world’s largest social network, Facebook. Lifecasting with Ovi is the first application to let people publish their location and status updates directly to their Facebook account from the home screen of a mobile device. Lifecasting goes beyond just publishing your status - it is about building deeper and closer connections between people. It triggers new kinds of communication patterns, such as sending messages or status updates or even navigating to a friend or a place.

Lifecasting will premiere on the new Nokia N97 mini, companion to the successful Nokia N97. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has drafted a plan to monitor all telecommunication traffic, including landlines, mobile services and emails, a private TV channel reported on Monday.

According to the channel, a code of conduct has been finalised and a draft had also been displayed on the PTA website. The PTA has also urged stakeholders to give recommendations by September 16.

Ports and Shipping State Minister Nabeel Gabol said the step was being taken to keep an eye on anti-state elements. He said the civil liberties of the people granted by the constitution of the country would not be affected. Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Haider Abbas Rizvi said his party would not support the proposed plan in parliament.

President Asif Ali Zardari on September 29, 2008 had passed the Prevention of electronic Crimes Ordinance (PECO). According to this law, all powers have been given to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the one who will involve in such crime will be punished with death or imprisonment with heavy fines. The fine can be Rs 10 million and the period of imprisonment can be 3 month to 10 years whereas one could appeal in the high court or the Supreme Court. In May, Interior Minister Rehman Malik had directed the FIA to crack down on unscrupulous elements involved in cyber crime, particularly the misuse of short message service (SMS).

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, announced that sales of the Samsung Star, its hugely popular touch screen mobile phone, surpassed the 5-million mark this month. The Star (model number S5230), launched in May, is the fastest model in Samsung’s history to reach the milestone.

Launched first in Europe, one million of the touch screen devices were sold in the first month and a half alone, after which the company expanded sales efforts to include markets in CIS, Southeast and Southwest Asia, East-Central Africa, China, and Central America.

More than 700,000 units of the Star were sold in May and more than 900,000 in June. Monthly sales in July and August were 1.6 million and 1.8 million, respectively. Based on the current trend, Samsung projects total cumulative sales to reach 10 million globally by November.

“We’re very pleased by this success,” said Young-hee Lee, Vice President of Marketing, Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “We see the demand for touch screen phones increasing and we will continue to offer consumers a diverse range of products, supported by unique marketing campaigns.”

The Star has sold particularly well in Europe, where Samsung has sold more than 2.8 million units, topping sales lists in key markets such as France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Italy.

The Star was launched as an affordable mobile phone, appealing to young consumers with its slim, 11.9 mm body and 3-inch WQVGA touch screen. It also boasts high-tech features such as Samsung’s exclusive high-quality sound technology, DNSe, as well as a SmileShot-enabled camera and Bluetooth v2.1. The Star’s global success can be attributed in part to its sleek design, interactive and user-friendly UI, and its reasonable price point.

To drive sales, Samsung also launched active marketing programs in emerging markets where the phone is being sold, tailoring its activities, such as experimental Mobile Live events and outdoor marketing, to specific trends in those countries.
